The international pianist Trung Sam, born to Vietnamese parents in Essen, Germany, graduated with distinction from the music universities in Vienna and Karlsruhe. The focus of his work is on art song, in particular the German Lied. Today, Trung Sam is considered one of the most gifted and accomplished accompanists of his generation and performs art song recitals troughout Europe in the USA as well as in Far East Asia.
The press praises his magical sound and his extraordinary understanding of breathing, phrasing, and colour; an artistry that makes him a sought after partner for singers.
The “Göttinger Tageblatt” newspaper writes: “... Trung Sam: perfect partner... technically precise, sensitive touch, and enchanting colours.”
Recitals with singers such as Christoph Prégardien, Roman Trekel, Christian Elsner, Thomas Michael Allen, Susanna Martin, Britta Stallmeister, Lisa Wedekind, Thaisen Rusch, Julian Freibott, Falko Hönisch and many others, have lead the pianist throughout Europe to famous festivals such as the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg, the Niedersächsische Musiktage Hannover, the Beaminster Festival England, the Weingartner Musiktage, the Ludwigsburg Schlossfestspiele and the Beethovenfest Bonn. He has also performed in renowned venues such as the Symphony Bamberg, Konzerthaus Berlin, Philharmonie Essen, Schloss Ettlingen, Liederhalle Stuttgart, Opéra de Lille, Paris, Musikverein Vienna, and the Tonhalle Zurich.
Several awards testify to his extraordinary talent as an accompanist:
The “Liedpreis” awarded by the ministry of culture of Schleswig-Holstein in 2005 and 2006, the “Thomas-Wiese-Prize” for Liedbegleitung (song accompaniment) in 2005 and 2006, the award for the best song accompanist at the Joseph-Suder song contest. He was named “Accompanist of the year 2007” by the Culture Fund Baden and was first-prize-winner at the German Music Competition (Deutscher Musikwettbewerb) Berlin in 2007.
Studio and live recordings of various recitals have been repeatedly broadcast on stations such as the SWR, BR, HR, NDR, Deutschlandradio, Radio France and CD recordings released by the lables “Harmonia Mundi France” and the publishers “Carus”.
In addition to his concert activities, he is dedicated to the education of young musicians. He gives regular masterclasses for art song interpretation at renowned institutions in Europe, the U.S. and Asia. Trung Sam is a lecturer for art song at the music university in Hanover.
